Parliamentary Action to Address GBV and Modern Slavery in Supply Chains

Sen Esther Okenyuri, MP, participated in a workshop on Strengthening Parliamentary Action to Address Gender- Based Violence and Modern Slavery in Supply Chains, delivered in partnership with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK) and the National Assembly of Kenya.

The workshop focused on two of the world’s most challenging and far-reaching humanitarian issues. In every nation, people are still facing discrimination and violence based on their gender. In every nation, supply chains are compromised by human exploitation and crimes of modern slavery. Tragically, both modern slavery and gender-based violence are responsible for tens of millions of victims.

Parliamentarians have a unique ability to enact change and address these issues. During this workshop, we considered challenges and objectives from multiple perspectives – legislatively, culturally, socially, legally, and governmentally.

It also provided a platform for colleagues to share their unique experiences and learn from one another’s successes and frustrations; also discovering new solutions and opportunities for collaboration.

Other participating legislatures included: National Assembly of The Gambia, National Assembly of Lesotho, Parliament of Sierra Leone, Parliament of Uganda, National Assembly of Zambia, Parliament of New South Wales, Parliament of Jamaica, Nova Scotia House of Assembly, States of Jersey Assembly, UK Parliament and the Legislative Council of St Helena.
